Friends, it has been a while.

Maybe I should apologize for not writing or sharing a Substack post in months. I cannot say I’m sorry, though, because it’s been a sweet season of pulling back and leaning in.

As a writer of Christian inspiration and encouragement, it’s easy to fall into the habit of always looking for an idea or lesson to share with readers. If you came to my home, you’d find spiral notebooks, notepads, and post-it notes in several locations, all containing my writing ideas scribbled down.

When one of those ideas meshes with God-given inspiration, it can make for an article worth sharing. Unfortunately, this habit of always looking for the next great idea becomes an issue when your personal devotion and Bible study time is consumed with the looking. That is where I found myself over a year ago.

Funny thing, I know I’m not alone in this. I recently received an email from another Christian writer here on Substack, detailing how she found herself in a similar situation. Maybe there’s something in the water. Could be it’s the times we are living in. I believe it has something to do with the pressure we feel to measure up to this online life, in the middle of trying to keep up with our real life.

So, what did I do?

I took some time away from writing and all that goes with it. If you’ve been following me since the days of my WordPress blog, you know this is not the first time I’ve taken a break from writing. I know from experience that pulling back can sometimes be a good thing.

My thought was, “I’ll take a few weeks, or a couple of months off.” But when that time came to an end, I felt a strong sense to wait. Those months of pulling back from the pressure to create something, and leaning in to the Lord was such a sweet time.

Early mornings with a cup of coffee and my study Bible felt new and fresh. In pulling back, I simplified my devotion and study time. I have this knack for accumulating great resources and tools. Y’all know I love a good Bible study tool.

When this year started, I stripped it all down to three things: my Bible, a favorite prayer book, and one teaching book. The current teaching book I’m reading has 50 short lessons (Truths to take on the world)1. It’s designed to do one lesson a week, but I’ve been taking more time than is necessary. Pulling back and leaning in takes time, friend.

Am I coming back to writing?

Yes, that is the plan. I’ve been dusting things off and sprucing up around here. Going forward, I feel God wants something a little different from me. Essays in more of a devotional format, probably 500 words or less (someone said hallelujah). If this sounds like something you’d enjoy reading, please stick around.

When I read portions of Old Testament Scripture describing the tabernacle, I think of a college course I took in the 1980s. Obviously, that was a while ago, but I can still hear the professor breaking down the details, which went on for an entire semester.

God gave Moses specific, minute instructions on every aspect of the mobile tabernacle. He said, “Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them” (Exo. 25.8). At the time, the Israelites were a wilderness-wandering people, following their escape from Egyptian captivity.

Exodus 26.31 provides just one brief example of these detailed instructions. God said, “You shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet material and fine twisted linen; it shall be made with cherubim, the work of a skillful workman.” This veil (or curtain) was a necessary part of God’s plan for the people He called His own.

The veil, made according to God’s detailed and extravagant design, served as “‘a separation’ between the Holy of Holies and the Holy Place. Its function was to separate all men, even the priests, from” God’s presence.1

In the days of wilderness wandering, and extending over the centuries until Jesus’ arrival, the people needed a go-between. They required someone with the assignment, training, and anointing to represent them before God.

In the New Testament, the writer of Hebrews recounts the detailed instructions given to Moses. I love how The Message puts this in plain language we can understand. “That first plan contained directions for worship, and a specially designed place of worship.” (Heb. 9.1) This is referring, of course, to the Old Testament tabernacle.

“Only the high priest entered the smaller, inside tent, and then only once a year, offering a blood sacrifice for his own sins and the people’s accumulated sins. This was the Holy Spirit’s way of showing…as long as the large tent stands, people can’t just walk in on God.” (Heb. 9.7-8).

Hebrews goes on to explain, “Under this system, the gifts and sacrifices can’t really get to the heart of the matter, can’t assuage the conscience of the people, but are limited to matters of ritual and behavior. It’s essentially a temporary arrangement until a complete overhaul could be made.” (Heb. 9.9-10) The Old Testament system was flawed; it was insufficient. And God knew that one day a greater sacrifice would be required.

Some years back, I spent a few days on the property of a Catholic monastic abbey in northeastern Oklahoma. No, I am not Catholic, but the experience provided a peaceful location for a personal spiritual retreat. A family member and I (both Protestant Christians) stayed in a guesthouse onsite, hosted by one of the nuns. We spent time in individual prayer and Bible study, explored the grounds, and enjoyed the immense solitude.

As a guest at Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey, you may choose to attend prayer times and various masses (according to the current schedule). Because the Abbey is a Benedictine community, and home to 55 monks, the observance of their rituals and solemnity was quite fascinating.2

Though I have friends who were Catholic prior to joining the Christian faith, I had not set through a Catholic ‘worship gathering’ before visiting the Abbey. The experience was especially interesting due to the presence of the monks, and the inclusion of Gregorian chanting and Latin liturgy.

Honestly, I found much to appreciate—the beauty of the worship setting, the devotion of the monks to their faith, and a commitment to the rituals of the church on behalf of the Catholic believers. However, I could never become Catholic, and here’s why.

I believe we no longer need a go-between.

The veil has been torn, making a way for us to enter into the presence of Almighty God. We do not need a priest to receive our confession and present it to the Father repeatedly. If you have received Jesus as Lord and Savior, your salvation is complete in Him.

Christ is sufficient, now and for all eternity. Hallelujah.

Easter is about the beautiful exchange that sealed our redemption. We owed a price we could never pay. Jesus paid that price, that we might go free. One life, in exchange for the lives of many.

The song linked below, and released a few days before Easter, says it so well. “You gave it all. Now it's paid in full. Lord, I can't believe You did that for me.”

Friend, the work of Christ is sufficient, once and for always. Remember this as you celebrate the Easter holiday.

Hallelujah, He is risen, indeed!

Hello, friends!

Lately, much of my thoughts and feelings are dominated by my aching hip and lower back troubles. Seems the aches and pain are always with me. I now better understand the term ‘chronic pain’. I’m grateful for my chiropractor, a nice young woman who treats me gently—until treatment requires a firmer hand. Ouch.

On a brighter note, Easter is fast approaching. This is my favorite time of the year. I love the feel of Spring in the air. As I sit at my desk, I hear the sounds of the new season. A neighbor’s lawn is being mowed. Children’s voices are heard as they bike down the street.

My desk intentionally faces away from my office window, as I’m easily distracted while working. But since the window looks out on the front of our house, I sometimes catch the moving shadows: people walking their dog, the Amazon person dropping off a package, a car pulling in the driveway at the end of a long day.

My words may seem a bit random or recklessly thrown together, today. Sometimes, this is how my mind works. Nevertheless, in this Easter season, I am thankful for a Savior who cares about our aches and pain. He meets us where we are, walks with us through the changing seasons, and is not only our Redeemer, but our Healer.

Happy Easter!

May we find time to enjoy this season, even if it includes an ache and pain, or two.

My preference when it comes to fiction is always historical (romance, family, women). This was my third book in The Daughters of the Mayflower series. Some books in the series I would not recommend, but this is a beautiful story and well written.

How do we describe a person who is faithful?

In Hebrew 11.1, faith is interpreted as a firm persuasion, a belief in the truth of someone or something. As Christians, we also think of faith as reliance upon Christ for salvation.1

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11.1 (NASB)

The eleventh chapter of Hebrews is often referred to as the Hall of Faith. It provides us with a picture of how the biblical faithful lived. The writer of Hebrews says, “For by [faith] the men of old [the ancients, the fathers, ancestors]2 gained approval [to be well-testified about]”3 (Heb. 11.2).

To be well-testified about…

What a legacy—to live in such a way as to be well-testified about when you’re gone! Friend, is it too fanciful a dream to imagine we might have the opportunity to leave such a testimony behind?

Our daughter recently sent me a link to the book My Mom's Testimony: A Guided Journal for Sharing Her Beautiful Story. She said, “Mom, I really want you to do this and give it to me for my birthday or Christmas.” I said, “It may take me a few years to finish writing it all down, so don’t expect it anytime soon.”

To be honest, my initial thought was, “I’m not sure my testimony can benefit others enough to fill a journal.” But then, here I am, sharing so much of my life online for anyone to read.

Besides, what a gift to be able to share words with my children on how God has saved and kept me and shown me His great love and kindness through the years.

Who Made the Hall of Faith?

The infamous Hebrew’s Hall of Faith shares the testimony of Abel, who offered a better sacrifice than his brother Cain, through which he obtained the testimony of a righteous man (v.4).

We read of Enoch, the faithful one who pleased God. From his story, we learn that without faith it is impossible to please Him (v. 5-6).

There’s Noah, the one who heard God’s request and prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, even though everyone thought he had lost his mind (v. 7).

And Abraham, the spiritual father of all believers, made the Hall of Faith. He obeyed God, and went out, not knowing where he was going (vv. 8-10). What a testimony!

Sarah’s faith in God (who promised she would bear a child in her old age) resulted in her name appearing on the list. It wasn’t only the men who had faith.

Others who were faithful included Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, and Moses. Even Rahab, the prostitute, made the list for her obedience to God’s plan.

The writer of Hebrews says there was no time or space to adequately record the details of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets. Then he goes on to say that by faith, they conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword… (vv. 32-34). Yes, and amen!

The Bible is rich in history and prophecy and, of course, the gospel. It also holds the stories of faithful ones—those who learned to place their faith in the One True Living God. Their experiences provide valuable lessons for us, still today.

The Triumphs of Faith

In my Bible, there’s a heading that prefaces the eleventh chapter of Hebrews. Instead of The Hall of Faith, it reads The Triumphs of Faith.4 I love these words used to highlight the recounting of those who were faithful to their God.

Their triumph of faith is seen in their obedience. They triumphed in pleasing God and living a righteous life. They fought battles on His behalf, and conquered kingdoms in His name.

Friend, life is not easy. In every generation, we face challenges too many to number. We also have the grand opportunity to live a life of faithfulness and devotion to our God.

Let us determine to be named among the faithful, to the very end.

Here in Oklahoma, we see the beginning signs of Spring. While some days still bring cooler temperatures, and we may even see a little snow or freeze before Easter, Spring is coming. With the changing season, we see the beauty and splendor of God’s creation on display.

Visit my home state, and you’ll find a variety of landscapes, foliage, and scenery. Oklahoma is a beautiful place filled with wide open plains, rolling hills and valleys, and lakes and rivers. Fields of wheat green up in the Springtime, and trees begin to blossom.

I bet some of you could write a few paragraphs about the beauty of your home. What extravagant beauty God created for us to enjoy here on earth.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen. 1.1

As Creator of the world, it is God’s nature to create. We acknowledge His attributes [something true about him, his characteristics1]. God is Infinite, Col. 1.17; Immutable, Malachi 3.6; Omnipotent, Job 11.7-11; Omniscient, Isaiah 46.9-10; Omnipresent, Psalm 139.7-10, and we are just getting started.

And God is the Creator and Maker of it all.

The Nature of God’s Creation

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Gen. 1.2

His Spirit—

We can rejoice that the Spirit was present at creation. The Christian belief in the Trinity—Father, Son, and Spirit—is a non-negotiable doctrine of our faith.2 As Creator, God the Father was there at the beginning. The Spirit was there, too, hovering over the waters.

Think about this, friend, and I hope it blesses you, as it has me. The Holy Spirit was there, hovering [moving] over, and joining in the creative act of God. The very breath of the Spirit was moving about, praying over this providentially ordained moment of all time (which included the creation of time itself).

Order—

The process of God’s creation coming to fruition took place in a beautiful and orderly fashion, as detailed in Scripture. Up to this time, the earth was formless and empty. “There was no order on earth, it was empty and chaotic, uninhabitable and uninhabited…”3 You might say the earth needed some serious structure.

The format was a 7-day process filled with specific acts organized by category, culminating in a Sabbath day of rest. But there is more than the orderly manner in how it came to be. God’s creative nature literally “brought order to the world…”4 How powerful is that! And He continues to bring order to our lives, today, when we follow Him.

Thank you, God! Receive our thanks for your plan and purpose at work in creation, both then and now. And thank you for bringing a holy order to our lives, today.

The Power of God’s Creation

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. John 1.1-2

His Word—

The power of God’s creation is evident in His Word. John 1.1-2 is one of the most important statements in the entire Bible! John’s Gospel points directly to creation, joining the Old and New Testaments together—the ‘then and now.’

When God created the world, the Word [Jesus] was with God, and the Word was God. The writer of Hebrews confirms what John wrote—that Jesus was present at creation. “He [God] has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” (Heb. 1.2)

The evidence of God’s power begins with creation and permeates all Scripture. Giving thanks, we can say with the psalmist, In God, whose word I praise—in the Lord, whose word I praise—in God I trust... (Psalm 56.10-11)

Light & Life—

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1.3-5

The apostle John goes on to declare that the world was made through Jesus, who “is life, and who is unquenchable light.”5 So, the Light of the world, by the power of God, brought light into being. And the darkness has no power over the Light.

The Light paved the way for the creation of humanity, when God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. (Gen. 2.7) Through both miracles of creation and salvation, the power of the Word comes alive in us, bringing light and life to our dark souls. Hallelujah!

At salvation, new life springs forth in great grace and beauty! Rejoice in this as you celebrate the soon arrival of Spring.

Hello, friends!

At the risk of talking about the weather ALL winter, here I am talking about the weather…again. Wow, did we have some in mid-February. From the national weather reports, I’m guessing many of you did, as well.

The second week of February, we were on weather-watch as my parents were scheduled to fly to California for a family funeral. For Mom and Dad, who are in their mid-eighties, the general stress of flying is bad enough without weather delays. Fortunately, their scheduled flight made it out just in time to avoid the cancellations from winter storm #1.

A few days later, we were on weather-watch again, as Mom and Dad were scheduled to make their return flight the day winter storm #2 would arrive. We called them to say, “Do not come home. It’s absolutely freezing—record sub-zero temps for Oklahoma. And your flight is likely to be cancelled due to ice on the ground.” They heeded our advice and extended their stay by a few days.

When we picked them up at the airport, I had a blanket ready for Mom, as it was still freezing. There was a mound of ice on their driveway to welcome them home. That was three days ago. This afternoon, I went for a glorious walk in the sunshine. The high was 74 degrees!

I saw a post on social media that said, “Look at the weather being all cute today, when exactly one week ago she tried to kill us!” If you live up north, this must sound overly dramatic, but we are not set up for this in Oklahoma. (Ask the semi-truck drivers who wrecked their rigs on the solid sheet of ice on the interstate highways across our state.)

Thankfully, the weather turns on a dime where the winds come sweeping down the plains1. Today, it feels like Spring is on its way.

4. FAV RECIPE — 🍲 On Super Bowl Weekend, I wanted to make sausage balls but did not have Bisquick in the pantry, and didn’t want to go to the store. Found this recipe for How to Make Sausage Balls Without Bisquick, and we loved how it turned out. (By the way, the recipe calls for self-rising flour. I only had all-purpose, but you can find instructions online for how to turn all-purpose into self-rising. Just Google it!) Going forward, I’ll being making sausage balls without Bisquick, as it’s a little bit better for us, anyway.

“Come and see.”

In the first chapter of John, Jesus found Philip, and said to him, “Follow me.” Philip ran to get Nathanael, telling him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about…Jesus of Nazareth!” Nathaniel said to Philip, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” (John 1.43-46)

In response, what came out of Philip’s mouth are some of my favorite words in all Scripture. “Come and see.” These three simple words Philip used to answer Nathanael’s question are a wonderful model for us in learning how to share our Christian faith with others and invite them into the experience of faith.1

If you find yourself among non-believers (friend, family, or foe), and feel led to extend an invitation to a Christian gathering, but words fail you, remember Philip’s words. “Come and see.” Perhaps that’s the only invitation they need.

In this post, you may find that certain Hindu practices resemble those of Buddhism. There are also similarities to Islam. We’re about halfway through this series, and it’s a lot to absorb. My goal is to present an overview. If you want to learn more, check the footnotes and links at the bottom of each essay.

Hinduism—

The Hindu religion is said to be one of the oldest religions, if not the oldest. If you talk to Hindus, they will likely claim this to be true.

Historians confirm the existence of complete scriptural Hindu texts dating back 3,000 years.2 Going back as far as 4,000 years ago, a group of Aryan people from northern India brought the teachings of Hinduism to the rest of the subcontinent. (Today, this includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.) The teachings were shared orally from teacher to student. Over time, this was put into written form called Vedas.3

Most of us have witnessed or heard of occurrences within religious communities that should not be tolerated. Instances of abuse, neglect, or rejection inside a church or faith system seem unthinkable.

Recently, I read the story of a Christian family in Southeast Asia who were raised Hindu. After becoming Christians in 2021, “they quickly realized the cost of their decision as their relatives beat them and drove them from the village” [where they lived].4

By the grace of God, they found refuge through a church and lived on the church’s land for several years.5 During this time, church members had the opportunity to disciple them in the Christian faith. God continued to provide for the family when they faced more obstacles, like the loss of their home and income.

Thanks to assistance received from an international church organization, they were able to settle on leased land, build a home, and earn a living. They continue to grow in the faith, praying that more Hindus will come to know Jesus.6

Praise the Lord for the boldness of this family to stand firm in their Christian faith. What a beautiful story of redemption, and a reminder that the gospel message is for everyone.

Commonalities—

There are few commonalities among Christianity and Hinduism. The Hindu religion is complicated, making it challenging to pinpoint similarities. As one Christian teacher explains, “Hinduism is not exclusive and accepts all religions as valid. Christianity, however, teaches that Christ is the only way to God.”7

Here is a short list, though number one points back to the ancient practice of both religions—one that is no longer required of Christians under the New Testament Covenant.

1. One commonality applicable to most ancient religions is the practice of reparation for sins through sacrifices to a god. This did include Hinduism and ancient Judaism (Israel), both known to have practiced animal sacrifice.8

2. A second commonality is that the theologies of both Hinduism and Christianity preach a divine commandment of righteousness, with failure to comply resulting in a penalty.9 (see #4. below)

Major Differences—

Christianity and Hinduism are different on many levels. For the sake of space and time, listed below are five notable differences.

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1.17

#1. On God / gods— Christianity is monotheistic (the belief that there is only one God).10 As such, the Creator of all things desires to have a personal relationship with us—He is a personal God. Hinduism is pantheistic (showing or holding a belief in many or all gods, or the belief that God exists in, and is the same as, all things, animals, and people within the universe).11 Hindus believe in an impersonal deity: Brahman, the creator of Hinduism.12

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3.16

#2. On human dignity— The Bible (Christian) teaches that every person has inherent moral worth because Christ died for all.13 The Hindu religion teaches followers to embrace their individualistic values, taking into consideration the previous lives they have lived through reincarnation.

So God created [humankind] in his own image, in the image of God he created them… Genesis 1.27

#3. On the value of women— In the Christian faith, all people are image-bearers of God—including women! Christianity places value on women. About woman, Proverbs says, “She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue” (31.26). Hinduism has historically placed low value on women. While improved in some locations and sects of Hinduism, there is a long way to go in abolishing outdated and irrelevant traditions [affecting women] like child-marriage, arranged marriage, lack of education, abuse, and more.14

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God… Romans 3.23

#4. On sin— Christianity teaches that all human beings are born with a sinful nature, but salvation by grace through faith in Jesus brings us into right relationship with God. In the Hindu faith, there is no acknowledgement of original sin, but they view sin as a formation or a consequence of desire-ridden actions, evil nature, [or] karma.15

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ... Philippians 3.20

#5. On the afterlife— Christians hold to the teaching of Scripture, that as sons and daughters of God, we will spend eternity with Jesus Christ. Hinduism sees the afterlife as a repetitious cycle of births and rebirths (Karma).16 Theirs is a works-based cycle intent on earning their way to freedom from the cycle.

How to Engage?—

Remember Nathaniel’s rather condescending response to Philip. “Can anything good come from [this]?” By comparison, Philip’s words seem expectant. “Come and see!” It’s as if he was saying, “What have we got to lose?” Shortly thereafter, Nathaniel met Jesus, and was forever changed.

So, if you find yourself in the presence of a Hindu, and you feel compelled to invite them to a Christian gathering (or simply out to lunch to get to know them better)—but you’re hesitant on how to begin, try the “Come and see” mindset. Extend the hand of friendship. Invite them to have coffee. Ask them to join you for a worship night or women’s event at church.

As you consider how to interact with those outside the Christian faith, remember these steps shared throughout the series.

Be bold—“…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” —Matthew 5.16

Be respectful, kind, and wise—“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” —Colossians 4.5-6

Be willing to listen—“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3.15

Be open to extending an invitation—“Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!” Psalm 66.5

As we kick off 2025, we may need to be reminded of how to live. Yes, we are still kicking the year off because January may have felt like it lasted 97 days.

Be very careful, then, how you live... Ephesians 5.15

The Bible is always a wonderful place to begin on this topic. The writings of the apostle Paul are one of my favorite resources for lessons on living and being, in Christ. Other New Testament writers certainly provide good instruction, too, but Paul’s teaching is abundant.

Did you know the book of Ephesians is quite like Colossians (also written by the apostle Paul)? In fact, seventy-eight verses between the two books are almost identical.1 I mention this because the repetition of Paul’s teaching helps to establish its importance for Christians.

To say the book of Ephesians is rich would be an understatement. One commentary describes Ephesians as “the real thing” and it deserves maximum attention and application.2 Chapters 1-3 center on the identity of believers in the gospel; chapters 4-6 focus on the implications of the gospel, and how to live it every day.3

In your Bible, right before Ephesians 4:17, you may see the heading “Instructions for Christian Living” or similar wording.4 Here in chapter 4, Paul begins to remind the Ephesians on how they should live. Take time to read all of chapters 4 and 5 if you can. Notice how 4.26-27 seems to reiterate what Paul is saying throughout—Do not sin! Do not give the devil a foothold! (Eph. 4.26-27)

Is this still good advice for us today? I think so. Life is a challenge and sometimes hard. We are faced with temptation every day—temptation the devil puts in our way to try to convince us to lean away from God. Reminders in Scripture serve to encourage us to stand firm in our faith.

Instructions on How to Live

The Ephesians section “Instructions for Christian Living” continues all the way to Ephesians 5:20. Note below the instructions the Apostle Paul shared with believers.

• Walk in love…as Christ loved us (5.2)

• Have among you no hint of sexual immorality, or any kind of impurity, or of greed… (5.3)

• There should be no obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking…but rather thanksgiving… (5.4)

This was clear and straight-forward teaching for New Testament believers. When studying Scripture, we always take into consideration the original audience. They would have understood these words from Paul. (Friend, if this instruction is new to you, try reading in a modern translation of the Bible. See footnote for suggestions.)5

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Ephesians 5.8-10

In Ephesians 5.8-10, Apostle Paul’s words reinforce why Christians are expected to live differently. He relates this to the difference between darkness and light. Paul is speaking figuratively of moral darkness, and an absence of spiritual light and truth.6

What is this spiritual light? To answer this adequately would require an entire essay, and maybe I’ll write it one day. But in summary, spiritual light is the true knowledge of God and spiritual things.7

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity... Ephesians 5.15

As chapter 5 continues, we find additional instructions on how to live. One resource calls this section of Scripture “Christians Living on Target.”8 As you read the following list, keep this in mind.

• Be wise… (5.15)

• Make the most of every opportunity… (5.16)

• Do not be foolish, but understand God’s will. (5.17)

• Do not get drunk on wine, but be filled with the Spirit… (5.18)

• Join together, with psalms, hymns, and songs… (5.19)

• Give thanks to God the Father for everything… (5.20)

“Christians Living on Target”

In putting this essay together to share with you, here’s where I’ve ended up. If we wholeheartedly embrace the words of Ephesians 5.15 for ourselves—“Be very careful, then, how you live…” And if we begin to put into practice the instructions Apostle Paul gave to the early church, we become Christians living on target!

We carefully navigate the daily life we are living. We seek God’s wisdom, desiring moral discernment and practicality in our decision-making.9

We do not run foolishly amuck but seek God’s will in all things. Our mind and actions are in control, and we sense God’s voice (and are grateful we’re not out-of-our-minds-drunk and unable to hear Him).

As Christians living on target, we enjoy time spent among fellow believers. As people filled with the Spirit of God, we are called to be in unity with one another—praising, singing, and rejoicing. And we give thanks to God, at all times and in all things!

This is how we are to live.

May we take care to remember the treasure of instruction found in God’s Word and live it to the full.

Hello, friends!

Winter is in full swing for most of us. Here in Oklahoma, we had a lovely mid-January snow fall and no ice, which is always a good thing in this part of the country.

My husband grew up in the mountains of Colorado, and he loves the snow. He doesn’t get it often in Oklahoma, but when it does snow he can hardly wait to get out on the road. Being from Colorado, he knows how to drive on snowy roads, but most Oklahoman’s do not!

And then there’s me. When the weather forecast calls for snow, I immediately gather groceries for all the things—hot chocolate, soup, chili (and ingredients for Frito chili pie). As soon as the weather hits, I am home for the duration. I’m more than happy watching the snow from indoors with a good book and cozy blanket.

Here’s another winter update. Our refrigerator, washing machine, AND dryer have all been limping along for a while. I’ve been saving up to replace them, but didn’t know it would happen all in one day!

As a grand way to end January 2025, I found myself at a small, local appliance store. I shopped, selected, and transacted the necessary purchases. The fact that I did this alone is kind of a big deal, and I’m rather proud of myself.

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalm 34.18

Today, as I wrap up this edition, we are watching the heartbreaking reports of the airplane and helicopter crash into the Potomac River. It feels heavy. Though none of us ever want to see such tragedy, it’s in times like this that we are often drawn together as neighbors and friends.

Differing views on politics, religion, or other hot topics may fade into the background, as we lean in to the overwhelming shock and sadness. At least, we can hope this is the case.

Be sensitive in this time. You may have the opportunity to speak peace to those questioning why God would let this happen. If pressed for a response, try this gentle statement. “We live in a broken world. As Christians, we are not promised a life free from suffering or pain, but we are assured that God is with us in everything we encounter in this life.”

Both books are equally amazing, but I especially loved the Bible Study.

4. FAV RECIPE — 🍲 This Creamy Chicken Tortilla Soup is so good. There are many versions of tortilla soup out there, but this is a favorite at our house. We enjoyed it on that recent cold and snowy day. I used leftover rotisserri chicken from a previous meal, which helped to speed up the preparation.

5. MUSIC I LOVE — ♭ ♯ Friend, I hope this song and the video of thousands of young people praising the Lord will bless you, as it has me. The Lamb’s Book of Life.

See now that I, I am He, and there is no god besides Me… (Deut. 32.39)

You may remember a National Day of Prayer following the 9-11 terrorist attacks, which included interfaith religious services taking place in several locations.

In New York City, Oprah Winfrey led one of those gatherings, where she “boldly declared that all people pray to the same God.” This is known as religious pluralism—“the view that all religions, certainly all major or ethical religions, are equally valid paths to God or to ultimate reality.”1

As Christians, when we understand the differences, it should be next to impossible to imagine that ALL religions are leading to the God of the Bible—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.2

Buddhism—

Siddhārtha Gautama (563-480 B.C.) founded the Buddhist religion. Born in Nepal, his father was an actual king. In the culture of that day, Siddhārtha would have lived a life of extravagance and luxury.

The story goes that Siddhārtha eventually grew discontented with a life of affluence and hedonism (the pursuit of pleasure). As a result, he set out on a journey to become a truth-seeker. What he discovered became the basis for the Buddhist religion.

Today, Buddhists are heavily concentrated in the Asia-Pacific region of the world, where 98% of all Buddhists live. Only 1% of the world’s Buddhist population reside in North America.

In 2010, I stepped off the plane in the country of Myanmar (in Southeast Asia) for the first time. The traffic, noise, and street markets reminded me of Haiti. The overwhelming poverty was reminiscent of Latin America. The culture shock of this trip were the signs of Buddhism at every turn.

On planes and trains, we saw monks in full dress. They walked the streets, carrying their container to collect alms from Buddhist followers. Several times a day, we’d hear chanting over the city-wide public address system (simultaneously, this played on the television in our hotel room)—a call to prayer in this place where the State religion is Buddhism.

A friend once took us to visit the Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist temple in Myanmar. “The main gold-plated dome is topped by a stupa containing over 7,000 diamonds, rubies, topaz and sapphires, the whole giddy concoction offset by a massive emerald positioned to reflect the last rays of the setting sun.”3 Climbing back into the taxi, I said to my travel partner, “I felt like we were just at an amusement park, except the people were there to pray!”

In his book, Perfectly Suited, J.D. Peabody shares a story from a ministry class he was enrolled in. “Most students in the class were young white males in pursuit of a pastoral career. One Korean woman sat in the back every week, listening. She spoke little, and when she did, her strong accent made her difficult to understand. To my shame, I quickly dismissed her as someone who had little to contribute.”4

As the weekly class continued, time came for a session on the topic of persecution. The teacher opened for discussion, and future preachers eagerly shared their opinions on…suffering for the faith. Then, the female student from Korea unexpectedly joined in.5

“I grew up in a Buddhist family in Korea,” she said. “I became a Christian, and every Sunday as I walked home from church, I knew that when I arrived my father would beat me for going to the service.” J.D. Peabody writes, “The rest of us sat in stunned silence, feeling humbled to be in this sister’s presence.”6

In drafting this essay, I read over this woman’s words many times. I was moved to tears. I have dear friends born into the Buddhist culture in Southeast Asia who have lived a similar story, so this hit close to home. But also, I think God was reminding me that I’ve not really suffered for my faith—though there are Christians in the world who have, and who are now.

Commonalities—

One writer on Christianity and Buddhism said, “Christians believe that there is a God, whereas Buddhism has no god. The Buddha pointed the way, whereas Jesus said that he was the way. Christianity promises believers eternal life. Buddhism’s highest state, the state of enlightenment, is freedom from being reborn.”7 While I do not agree with everything the article presents, this statement is a near perfect description and leaves little room for commonalities between the two religions.

Here’s a brief list of what Christianity and Buddhism do share.

• Both began with a single individual—Christianity began with Jesus Christ. Buddhism is traced to Siddhārtha Gautama (the Buddha or Enlightened One).

• Both present a list of moral directives for followers—Christians: The Ten Commandments, as recorded in the Bible. Buddhists: The Five Precepts.

Four of the directives are the same in both religions: no killing, no stealing, no lying (bear false witness), and no adultery or sexual misconduct. It’s notable that the first three are ethical and, as a result, a part of most cultures around the world.

Major Differences—

It can be helpful to know the similarities, but it is key that we understand the differences between Christianity and Buddhism. Remember Oprah Winfrey’s statement, “all people pray to the same God?” This cannot be applied to the Buddhist religion.

But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. (Jer. 10.10)

#1. On the role of God— “Buddhism has been called ‘an atheistic religion’…” It’s said that “Buddha rejected all the gods of Hinduism which surrounded him” (being born into ancient Hindu culture).8 Buddhism acknowledges no god, including the God of the Bible. In contrast, Christianity is based on the belief that we serve the One who Jeremiah called the true God, the living God, and the eternal King.

#2. On the need for a Savior— Buddhists believe “the world keeps going through natural power,” thus, they have “no need…of a personal creator.” And since they have no god, Buddhists have “no savior.” 9 Christianity teaches that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and those who acknowledge Jesus as Lord receive his grace through the redemption that came by His death on the cross (Romans 3.23-24).

#3. On suffering— The foundation of Buddhism is found in the Four Noble Truths: 1) All “must suffer”; 2) “Suffering is caused by selfish craving”; 3) “Defeating selfish craving” leads to “Nirvana” (enlightened state); and 4) Nirvana is reached by following The Eightfold Path.10 The Christian view of suffering is wrapped up in 1 Peter 5.10: “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” (see also: Isaiah 43.2; John 16.33; James 1.12; 1 Peter 4.1)

#4. On eternity— Life, according to the Buddha, has no beginning or end. This religion teaches that “after beings die, they are reborn or reincarnated into a new form (deity, human, animal…).”11 Their mission is to live in such a way as to achieve a higher reborn state—again and again. The Christian faith is a message of eternal hope, as spoken by Jesus Christ, “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life” (John 5.24).

How to Engage?—

The Buddhist people I’ve encountered have been kind and peaceful, or this is the aura they give off. There are various sects of Buddhism and, as with most religions, they exhibit differing views and behaviors depending on which sect or denomination you encounter (remember the harsh treatment the Korean woman received from her father after she became a Christian).

Buddhists are extremely devout in their faith, especially those born into the religion. It is likely they will not be easily swayed to consider a different faith—especially the Christian faith.

My goal in sharing the series, “Christianity vs. Other World Religions,” is not to disprove other religions. We want to understand, so that we are prepared to engage those who practice a religion different from ours—that we might have an opportunity to lead them to Jesus.

Happy New Year, friend!

I hope your holiday season was peaceful and filled with the warmth of family, friends, and Jesus. When I use the word “warmth” I remember the time our next door neighbor commented to me, “I noticed all the family were at your house for Christmas. And everything looked so warm and lovely!”

Never has a comment meant more to me, because I think it encapsulates what’s most important, especially at Christmas. It’s not the gifts, food, or fun activities (though all of that can be lovely and good). And it’s surely not the amount of money you spent, how big your house is, or any of the material things.

What’s truly significant is that we come together in the “warmth” of love—the love that comes from our Father in heaven. And even if your holiday was not all you hoped it would be, I pray you felt the warmth of God’s presence near and that this will carry you into 2025.

In last year’s milestone post, I talked about the need to pause and reflect as we transition to a new year. This led me to title that post, “What impacted me the most in 2023?” This seemed to suit, so I’m using it again this year.

“What impacted you in 2024?”

There may be one big thing that immediately comes to your mind (i.e., lost my job; became a first-time mom; survived cancer; my adult child came back to God). Or it may be a series of events and occurrences that impacted your life over the course of the past year.

Write it down or type it out! As things come to mind that impacted you, I encourage you to start making a list.

Here is how I answered the question, “What impacted me in 2024?”

1. Started drawing my social security on my birthday in January. I’m still working, but have begun a slow, gradual transition towards retirement. (Cannot believe I’ve reached this phase, but I’m here for it.)

2. Created an editorial schedule for writing and tried to stick to it. It went well until mid-summer when I hit a major brick wall. Took a couple of months off from writing. (Thank you, readers, for staying with me.)

3. In March, my husband retired from coaching at the university level. He’s still working as athletic director, but giving up coaching was a big deal.

4. Completed a journal on the New Testament book of James. Still finalizing this project, which should be available on Etsy in 2025. (The goal is more journals to come, with God’s help.)

5. Tried to keep up with our grandsons’ sporting events and school activities as much as possible. It’s so fun seeing them interact with their friends, teachers, and coaches.

6. Read several impactful books this year. Shared about most of them in the Fast 5 newsletter.1 The most impactful book I read in 2024 would probably be Every Woman a Theologian by Phylicia Masonheimer.

7. Because my husband lives with an autoimmune disease, his health complications consistently impact our lives. The struggle is real and some days are hard. But God is greater than the struggle, praise His holy name.

8. We continued to navigate my sweet Mom’s symptoms of dementia. Those who’ve experienced this know it is not easy.

9. Read the Bible through from Genesis to Revelation for the 2nd year in a row! I’ve done Bible studies for many years, but I am loving this season of simply reading God’s word.

10. Observed our adult children make decisions this year to ensure the continued spiritual growth of their children (my grandsons). I think this may be what impacted me the most in 2024! 2

Pausing and Reflecting

Responding to the question, “What impacted me in 2024?” is a fantastic way to begin the process of pausing and reflecting over the past year.

This should not require reading a handbook or watching a 1-hour podcast. The process may move quickly for you. Or you may find yourself spending days (or weeks) pondering how 2024 went. But I promise the time spent will be worth it in the end.

But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands… Psalm 31.14-15

We find in Psalm 31 an encouraging reminder of God’s presence in our lives. You can trust that He has been and will be with you throughout the year and beyond.

As you pause and reflect, take a moment to read all of Psalm 31. I love the imagery that points to who God is. He is our refuge, deliver, rescue, fortress, lead, and guide. He is our Salvation. God is merciful to us, even in times of distress. His love is unfailing.

We can be exceedingly grateful for who He is, and that we have great HOPE for the year ahead!

Be strong and take heart, all you who HOPE in the Lord. Psalm 31.24

So, friend, if you’ve not already done so, take time for pausing and reflecting. If you need a little prodding along the way, here are a few tips to get you started.

• Give thanks for what the Lord did in 2024—for you and those you love.

• If this has been a hard year for you (and I know it has for many), give God praise anyway. Praise Him for the gift of salvation, that He has kept you, and that you have HOPE for tomorrow!

• And make that list of what impacted you the most in 2024! You may be surprised at what turns up on the list.

The magi from the east who followed the star to see Jesus are known to have been wise men. (Matthew 2.1)

When reading Matthew’s account of the Christmas story, I often wonder about them. Who were these men? Where were they from? What was the purpose of their mission, and what does their story mean for us?

Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. Matthew 2.2

Historically, the word magi referred “to a class of Persian wise men” such as “priests, interpreters of special signs, and especially astrology.” The Scripture says they came from the east. As Persian wise men, it’s probable they “were interested in astrology (they followed a star) and they were from the east (the direction of Babylon/Persia).”1

This helps us know something about who they were and where they were from.

They saw His star.

Bible scholars tell us “there were significant Jewish centers of learning in Babylon at the time of the magi”.2 The Wise Men would likely have been familiar with Old Testament prophecy, such as a star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel (Num. 24.17).

We might call them stargazers, today. Scripture is vague, but it seems the magi had a serious interest in the stars. Couple this with their education in Jewish teaching, and we can see why God would impress upon the Wise Men the importance of traveling to see the babe born of a virgin.

God gave them His star to guide them.

They made the journey.

No doubt, it took some time to prepare. Imagine the Wise Men involved in meetings and discussion with a larger group of wise men, priests, and governing leaders—explaining the sighting of this star, what it might mean, and their compulsion to go.

It would have been a long journey, with a large traveling entourage—a trip undertaken on foot or by camel. In today’s terminology, think of this as an official visit by dignitaries from one nation to another. Their stop in Jerusalem to inquire of King Herod (the sovereign) lends itself to the image of a royal visit.

These were regal Wise Men sent on a mission to see the child born king of the Jews and pay him honor. (We know Herod, for his own reasons, made a request that they report back to him once they found the child.)

And the star went on before them.

They rejoiced at their arrival.

After they had heard the king [Herod], they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. Matthew 2.9

Theologians say this trip may have taken as long as two years. There were decisions to be made, a lengthy preparation time, and the journey itself. Then, there was the expected time spent in Jerusalem.

Finally, the Wise Men continued, following the star until it came to a standstill where the Child was. And when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. (Matthew 2.10)

The star led them to the Christ-child.

They fell down at the sight of Jesus.

After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground... Matthew 2.11a

Perhaps the Wise Men rejoiced, in part, because they had reached their destination (Matt. 2.10). They may have been relieved that they could now start on their way back home, avoiding a second encounter with Herod. Falling prostrate on the ground before Jesus, however, indicates something deeper.

One commentary says, “It is doubtful…these quasi-pagan religious figures” could understand “Jesus’s divine nature.” 3 While it makes sense that they would demonstrate honor before a king [royal, sovereign], I can’t help but wonder if they were unexpectedly overcome in the presence of Jesus.

They fell down in the very presence of the Star—God’s only Son.

And they worshiped Him.

…and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matthew 2.11b

When we read the second chapter of Matthew, it’s only natural that we wonder what it must have been like to stand or kneel before Christ. How would we react? What might we bring as an expression of worship in His presence?

Because the Wise Men hailed from a place of mixed pagan religions combined with Jewish influence, “their worship is probably far more than even they understand.” 4 Today, we have the benefit of knowing the rest of the story—that this truly was Salvation come to earth. Still, they came prepared, and laid their gold, frankincense, and myrrh before Him.

This was their purpose—to see the child and worship Him.

To follow the star and find the one born king of the Jews was the Wise Men’s purpose. This is God’s desire for all people, is it not? That we hear the story of salvation and turn our hearts toward Jesus in worship.

If you have not yet made the decision to follow Jesus, friend, you can do so today. What better time than Christmas—to follow the Star.

Our Christmas tree looks different this year. I’m writing this on December 9^th. The tree is up, but no decorations hang from its branches. (Let me back this story up, though.)

The Friday after Thanksgiving Day, our family in Oklahoma came together to host a larger gathering of extended family. It was a lovely day, but also a lot of work (as all the planners out there know).

Because I knew the week would be especially busy, and with Thanksgiving falling so late this year, I wanted to get my tree up early. I got the snow-flocked, pre-lit tree put up in our family room, saving the Christmas decorations for after Thanksgiving, as is our custom.

Each evening, throughout the week of Thanksgiving, we enjoyed the glow of the white lights on the tree spreading early Christmas cheer. I guess you could say the undecorated tree grew on me because here we are on December 9th and, except for the flocked snow and white lights, the tree is still undecorated.

The thing is, I love it so much we may have started a new holiday tradition. That is, leaving the snow-flocked, pre-lit pencil tree just as it came out of the box—looking minimalistic with the lights glowing and no decorations!

This time of year, I sometimes struggle with writing a Christmas piece. What can I share that hasn’t already been said? Even most non-Christians know of the Christmas story and Jesus’ birth. However, there’s something about the lights of Christmas that’s captured my heart, so I’m running with it (along with a few other thoughts).

And the glory of the Lord shone around them!

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2.8-12

Notice how the angel shows up, surrounded by the light of God’s glory. Light is important in the Bible. It’s light that divides the darkness, and light that brings salvation to all. The shepherds represent the common people hearing, receiving, and telling of God’s light-come-to-earth in the person of Jesus.

Let there be light.

In Genesis 1.3, “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.’” God’s story has barely begun, and light is introduced. One commentary explains it like this: “Light changes everything, does it not? It cuts through all the unknown and unseen… It unveils and illuminates. What darkness aims to hide, the light will always expose.”1

The light shone on Abraham when God said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them [and] so shall your offspring be.” (Gen. 15.5)

Moses met the light when “God called to him from within the bush” on fire with God’s presence. (Exo. 3.2-4)

The prophet Isaiah foretold that those who walked in darkness would one day see a “great light” bringing salvation to all people. (Isaiah 9.2)

The apostle Paul looked back to Genesis 1.3 and proclaimed, “God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory...” (2 Cor. 4.6)

Let there be light.

Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. […] he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived. Luke 2.4-7; 21

Joy to the world! The Lord is come!

A few weeks ago, I started listening to my favorite Christmas music. What is it about the singing and carols of Christmas that make us nostalgic, excited, or sometimes even emotional?

When I was a girl, my dad had this album he’d spin on the record player during the holidays. Dad loved to wake us up to a loud and lively rendition of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and other fun tunes (link included for those who’ve never heard the song, just to prove it really did exist).

Since my dad was a pastor and in full-time ministry, most of my Christmas singing memories center around church programs, caroling with friends, and Christmas Eve candlelight services.

At the first notes of O Come, O Come Emmanuel, you’ll find me in tears. Singing What Child Is This has a way of making us feel like we were present at the birth of Jesus. And Joy to the World reminds us of the reason for the season—that the light has come!

Joy to the world! The Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and heaven and nature sing!

Joining together in singing the ancient carols softens hearts to the reality of that first Christmas and serves as a reminder that Christmas lives inside of us every day.

And Joy to the World is the perfect transition to turn our thoughts to worship at Christmas. The song was originally intended as a New Testament expression of praise.2 This is how it’s usually arranged and sung—as an opener to worship, or a grand climaxing praise to the holiday presentation.

Worship the Light of All Mankind!

John begins his Gospel with the following words, which feel like a worship event. Keep this in mind as you read this passage slowly…

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. (John 1.1-4)

The NIV Application Commentary says, “the prologue [of John’s gospel] may have been an ancient Christian hymn…”3 Imagine John 1.1-4 as a hymn of the early church. What a worship song this would have been—worshiping and proclaiming that Jesus, the baby born of a virgin, was with God at the beginning of creation.

Worship the Light.

In Luke chapter two, following the angel’s announcement to the shepherds concerning Jesus’ birth, Luke writes of something that also demonstrates a momentous worship event.

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2.13-14

This disruption to their routine so impacted the lowly shepherds that they took off towards Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. After they had visited the babe, they spread the word… (Luke 2.16-17)

In telling the Christmas story, we rejoice that the message of Messiah’s arrival began to spread immediately, but we sometimes fail to notice what happened next. According to Luke, the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen… (Luke 2.16-17)

They returned home worshiping! This became their testimony.

During the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” Matthew 2.1-2

Bible scholars say that some time passed before the wise men from the East arrived. It took them a while, but they were on a mission to see Jesus and confirm what they had been told—that this child was the one born king of the Jews.

They continued their long journey, following the star to where a young Jesus (about 2-years old now) was living with his earthly parents. When the wise men finally saw the child with his mother Mary, they bowed down and worshiped him. (Matt. 2.11)

They laid out their treasures before the boy Jesus—gold, frankincense, and myrrh. In this historic act of worship, these very wise men gave him the best that they had.

Worship the Light.

This year, my Thanksgiving was rather frantic with planning and prepping. Though we had the most wonderful family time, it left me completely unprepared for the Christmas rush.

I don’t know what this December looks like for you, friend, but in the busyness of the season, remember to slow down and take time. Maybe we all need this reminder—I know I do.

Let’s take time to enjoy the lights, join in the singing of Christmas music, and worship the King of kings in all his glory.

Light changes everything…4 It causes rejoicing and singing to break out, and worship to ensue.

Hallelujah! Jesus has come, bringing light and life to all people!

I am so thankful that the Host of heaven welcomes us right into His presence. Daily, he pours out blessing upon blessing, as we feast on His word—goodness and unfailing love, all the days of our lives (vv.6).

This Thanksgiving, whether you are the one hosting or that person showing up with a package of rolls in-hand—remember, we are all recipients of God’s great goodness and love.

He invites us to come and eat from His table—to rest, be restored, and find comfort.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23.6

Happy Thanksgiving, friend! This essay first appeared on my previous blog in 2018. I love the list of Scriptures and God-promises included below. Enjoy this updated version of “Living in Plenty.”

Even when times are difficult, Christians are living in plenty.

You may feel pressured when told to be thankful for what you have, if all you can think about is what’s gone wrong.

Most of us have been there on some level. I won’t elaborate on my family’s struggles over the years. In part, I do not want to highlight the many ways the enemy has come against us. God was and is working, and we choose to give Him the glory, instead of dwelling on the past struggles.

We look to the future, claiming a season of turnaround.

That said, any time is always a good time to be thankful. Even on our darkest days, if we pause and focus on the goodness of God, we are reminded of how blessed we are as His children.

The truth is, you are living in plenty.

By God’s hand and design, you have been given more than enough. We have enough in Jesus and find assurance of this in God's Word.

In this special Thanksgiving edition, you’ll find a list of Scriptures to bring you encouragement.1 When you struggle to find something to be grateful for, or you cannot lift your hands to praise the Lord, return to this list and remember—you are living in plenty, under the promises of Almighty God.

In this season, expect that the God of plenty is working on your behalf!

Lord, we receive these promises that lead us to living in plenty, today.

In July, I took up walking again. When we moved to this neighborhood (it’s the first place we’ve lived with sidewalks throughout) I started walking daily.

That was ten years ago, but why did I stop walking? I developed various ailments. If it wasn’t my knee giving me trouble, it was my ankle, my foot, my pinky toe. Not trying to be funny, but this repeated itself over and again. (For you youngsters, it is called aging.)

Anyway, I am now on a mission to take better care of myself. They say walking is a good habit for a woman my age. They say a lot of things, though.

What if what they’re telling us is just a rumor?

On one of my recent walks through the neighborhood, I listened to Scripture in the Bible app. My chronological daily reading is currently in the gospels, which I love. My preference is to hold my Bible in my hands as I read, but occasionally I will listen as I walk.

This particular day, as I walked along, the narrator in the Bible app recited Scripture from John 4.1-30 straight to my ears.

“He had to go through Samaria on the way…and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well…”

So, I’m walking and listening to the story of Jesus walking, and he arrives at Jacob’s well. “Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’”

This woman would have been quite confused because, in her day, Jews (and especially men) did not speak to Samaritans. But as shocking as that must have been, she and Jesus proceeded to have a conversation.

She said, “Why are you asking me for a drink?” Jesus told her that if she would ask, he would give her living water. To help her understand, Jesus explained, “…those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again.”

Eventually, the woman, “Please, sir…give me this water!”

The conversation continued and Jesus finally told her, “I Am the Messiah!” Somehow, she understood. Her eyes were opened, and the Scripture says she left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone.

That day, what the Samaritan woman shared with everyone she met became a “rumor” that would spread like wildfire.

Suddenly, as I’m walking, all I could hear in my head were the lyrics to a modern worship song that says…  It is true, it’s all true. Everything they said about you!1

Hello, friends!

In early October, I attended an afternoon session of the 2024 Painters, Poets, & Prophets gathering. This year’s conference was held in my hometown. My best friend received complementary admission, and she invited me to tag along!

Painters, Poets, & Prophets is “an interdisciplinary gathering designed to cultivate spiritual imagination and promote creative partnership in pursuit of Christ’s work of New Creation” and a part of HopeWords.org (Hope Writers’ Conference).

Now, I am not a painter, unless you count the paint-by-number game I enjoy on my iPad. Neither am I a poet, though I do sometimes read poetry. But my friend understands that Christian inspirational writing includes an element of sharing prophetic words to encourage readers. She knows this is an important part of what I do here at, While I Ponder with Karlene.

In addition, all my friend really needed to say was, “On Saturday afternoon, Beth Moore is speaking in the final session. Would you like to hear her?” Over the years, I’ve gone through several Beth Moore bible studies, which always encourage me ‘to no end’. (I wrote ‘to no end’ because it sounds just like something Ms. Beth would say.)

This conference was unlike anything I’ve attended, and I have been to a lot of conferences. The setting was an historic ‘older’ church in the downtown area—beautiful stained-glass, massive pipe organ, creaky pews and all. The atmosphere was welcoming and laid back. The people were kind and friendly.

It honestly felt like a room full of good friends, all seeking encouragement and inspiration for their calling/ministry and daily life. It was refreshing and unexpected.

Yes, if you’re wondering, Beth Moore knocked it out of the park. Her words spoke to my heart, moved me to tears, and encouraged me ‘to no end’. I’m grateful for Christian speakers who lean on the Holy Spirit for guidance.

In Part 1 of the series, Christianity vs. Other World Religions, I shared that Christianity and Islam are currently the two largest religions in the world. The prediction by Pew Research is that, by the year 2050, Christians will hold steady at 31.4% of the global population and Muslims (Islam) will increase to 29.7%.1

As my grandparents would say, “If Jesus tarries…” this information indicates that Christians and Muslims combined will equal over 60% of the world population by 2050. This is significant, and it is important that we educate ourselves on the religion of Islam.

What is Islam?—

Islam is the religion’s name. Its followers are known as Muslims. You may hear the term Arab used to refer to Muslims, but Arabs make up only about 13% of the Muslim population.

Muslims are taught to believe in the prophets: Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Joseph, Jesus, and Muhammad. They believe Muhammad was the final prophet sent by God. Yes, the Islam religion believes in God as the creator of the universe, whom they call Allah (the Arabic term for God). There are 5 main articles of the Islamic creed, which teaches that followers must maintain a belief in 1) one God, 2) angels, 3) prophets, 4) revealed scripture, and 5) a day of judgement.2

In the footnotes for this essay, you’ll find a link to an Islamic website used in research (WhyIslam.org). I encourage you to explore the information found there. For Christians, the more you understand about the beliefs and expectations of Islam, the more concerning it may become.

Commonalities—

According to a Reasons.org article by Kenneth Samples, historic Christianity and Islam are alike in some ways. It may be surprising to learn that there are similarities. While these parallels are not necessarily what we think of when discussing either religion, they are important to note. Historic Christianity and Islam are both:3

• theistic—believe in the existence of a god or gods4

• monotheistic in doctrine—characterized by the doctrine or belief that there is only one God5

• Middle Eastern in origin

• biblically oriented Abrahamic faiths (connected to the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament)

We can add to this list that both Christianity and Islam believe Jesus did exist, though what Islam believes about Him beyond his existence is different from Christianity. More on this in a moment.

Major Differences—

For the most part, we are interested in the differences between Christianity and Islam. Here are the primary points of disagreement in doctrine between these two dominant world religions.

1. The religion of Islam does not teach that the Bible is the final and authoritative Word of God. This is in direct opposition to the Christian belief that, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” (2 Timothy 3.16). Muslims, on the other hand, “believe that after the Old and New Testaments, God revealed a final testament: the Quran” which, in their view, is “the ultimate authority.” 6

2. The religion of Islam fails to acknowledge the Trinity. Not only is this in direct contrast to the Christian faith, but it is what sets us apart. In part 1 of this series, I shared that, “Christianity is based on the belief in a triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” The religion of Islam (Muslims) upholds Unitarianism, teaching that Allah is a single, solitary being.7

3. The religion of Islam does not believe in the incarnation. Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ was God come to earth in human flesh; he existed in both human form and divine nature. Muslims believe Jesus was simply an ordinary human being, albeit one born of a virgin, who did miracles and lived without sin.8

4. The religion of Islam denies the crucifixion of Jesus. Our salvation is a result of Jesus’ death on the cross, and there is no Christianity without the crucifixion! Though it’s reported that most Muslims believe in Jesus and hold him in high regard, they are taught that He did not actually die on the cross.9

In addition, Islam denies the imago Dei (i.e., believers bearing the image of God), original sin (i.e., we are born with a sinful nature), and salvation by grace.10

Many of these points denied by Islam are considered essential doctrine in the Christian faith. As Phylicia Masonheimer writes, “First-order issues are…truths summed up in the creeds: the nature of the Trinity; the physical life, death, and resurrection of Christ; the hope of eternity; the final judgement of sin.”11

How to Engage?—

If you know much about the history of the Muslim people, it may concern you to think of reaching out to them in friendship or hospitality. In some locations around the world, doing so requires extreme caution for Christians, as it could mean life or death.

Historically, Muslims have been raised with the belief that all unbelievers must be subjugated by Islam.12 Sadly, rooted in the teachings of Islam is a hatred for both Jews and Christians.

Today, there are millions of Muslims in the United States, and that number is growing. You may find them on the job, in your children’s school, or living next door. It is important to remember many Muslims, especially in America, love our country, our culture and want to befriend people of various religions.13

Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

As Christians, we hold the truth of the gospel in our hearts. We are called to be instruments of that truth, sharing that Jesus came to bring rest from the cares of this life, and give us everlasting peace in Him. What an honor to simply demonstrate the love of God by showing kindness and respect to those we encounter, no matter the religion they follow.

As you consider how to interact with those outside the Christian faith, remember these steps shared in Part 1 of the series.

Be bold—“…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” —Matthew 5.16

Be respectful, kind, and wise—“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” —Colossians 4.5-6

Be willing to listen—“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3.15

Be open to extending an invitation—“Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!” Psalm 66.5

What kind of value does social media bring to your life, if any? I wish we could sit down to chat about it.

I’ve heard people say that social media provides a place for them to connect with family and friends or reconnect with those they had lost contact with over the years.

There is also the benefit of using social platforms for promotion of business and services, as well as announcements going out to a particular group. Today, it’s how most of us get our news when it comes to school, church, government, favorite restaurants, and more.

So, though we’ve acknowledged a few benefits, I have always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with social media. I’ll not name which platforms, but I could say ‘all of them’ and mean it. One reason may be due to my personality—I’m private and like to keep my business ‘my business.’

How should Christians behave on social media?

One thing I struggle with on social platforms is the negative behavior of some people. You, too? Look, I am not perfect, but in my online actions I like to think I try to treat others with respect. I’m learning to ‘walk away’ when someone says something that makes my blood boil.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden…In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5.14-16

Those of us who call ourselves Christian may benefit from the reminder found in this passage in Matthew. If we want to glorify God, Jesus said, “…let your light shine before others.” Maybe we should practice this on social media.

In his letter to Philippian believers, the apostle Paul admonished them to strive for unity by staying mindful of whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, and anything that is praiseworthy. Note to self: Think about such things when on social media! (Phil. 4.8)

Can we handle one more? In John’s gospel, he shares Jesus’ words, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13.34) Sounds simple, but we know it is not always easy to do in this life—especially on social media.

After I began writing this newsletter, I remembered I wrote on this topic before. It was a few years into my writing journey. At the time, I was overwhelmed with all that needed to be done to achieve ‘success’ in the blogging world.

Visualize a pet hamster climbing on his little wheel, spinning round and round and round. Some days, this is what it feels like to be creating content, images, reels, posts, and then doing it all over again. Not to mention the time needed to schedule all of it to your various social channels.

About this thing called ‘success.’

As you can imagine, Christian writers on a mission to share truth and inspiration often experience challenges on many levels when it comes to maintaining a successful online presence. For one thing, what constitutes success in ministry-related endeavors?

My mission is to share what God gives me and leave the rest of the work to Him. I am not here to see my name made famous or become successful in the process. If God desires to bring more individuals on board as followers of my Substack or socials, I believe He will make it happen.

My job is to continue to work on my craft, do my best at writing what He gives me, hit the ‘publish’ button, and leave it in His hands. For this reason, success is a bit of a complicated thing when it comes to working for the Lord.

Hello, friends!

This story is somewhat hard for me to share because it makes me feel, well, old. But the truth is (and as my BFF likes to say), “I am old!”

Most of the time, I don’t really think of myself that way—as being old. It’s a strange thing that one can sometimes feel like the young person they used to be. Other days, though, I definitely feel my actual age.

Aching back. Cracking knees. Failing eyesight. Forgotten details I should know. All the above and more. Can I get an amen? I forgot to add to the list my failing ability to hear, and that is where this short story begins and ends.

Yes, I am now the not-so-proud owner of a pair of hearing aids. If you happen to see me out and about, do not ask me to see them. Now, I may mention it, or tap them lightly in your presence to call attention to the fact that I’m wearing them. However it goes, let it be my story to tell, okay?

I’d been in denial for years. I knew my hearing was not what it used to be. In fact, my primary care doc informed me of the fact maybe 8–10 years ago. I didn’t want it to be so.

As my hearing woes progressed, I began to notice when out to dinner, my husband would have to prompt me to give my drink order (I’d have no idea the server was speaking to me). In conversation, I would see a look on the other person’s face that indicated my response to their question had nothing to do with what they’d just asked me.

What pushed me beyond the denial, though, was when I started having trouble hearing what my grandsons were telling me. After a few such moments of having to ask them to repeat themselves several times, I knew I needed to consider help.

So, I sent a text to my good friend from college days. Her husband wears hearing aids, and we had recently commiserated together over the fact we were both losing our hearing. The text I sent to my friend went something like this.

“Girl, can you ask Paul to send me the information again for the hearing aid company he uses? He gave it to me and I put it in my phone. Now, I can’t find the note. I may have deleted it. Maybe I was in denial.”

She sent me a laughing emoji, and said, “Of course, friend. It’s hard to get old.” I wanted to respond, “Excuse me. I am not old!” But, I mean, here we are.

After an adjustment period (and boy is there one), I got brave enough to wear my new hearing aids while driving the car. As I backed out of the garage, the car started playing the playlist from my phone. I set off on my errand with worship music playing and me singing along.

Suddenly, I got emotional and thought I might need to pull over. It hit me that I could hear! I was singing. And I could hear the parts. I could hear the beat of the drums. The lyrics were easy to understand. But mostly, it was that I could hear myself.

[She] who has ears, let [her] hear. Matthew 13.43b

If you are a singer, you may feel this more than some. If you don’t consider yourself musical, just imagine losing something very dear and suddenly realizing you have found it again. That’s how I felt that day.

I’ve been singing my whole life—singing with my family as part of my parents’ evangelistic ministry, choir in high school and college, church choir as an adult. All of this led to being on the praise & worship team, and eventually becoming a worship pastor.

Today, I mostly sing for myself, singing along to my favorite worship music. To be able to hear myself “sit in” with the band (while driving down the road)—well, for just a minute, I think I felt a little less “old”. So, thank you to my new hearing aids for that. Maybe I should have left my denial behind sooner.

1. Everything, All the Time — My goodness, this could almost be my essay! Tresta writes, “If you are a new reader (Hey! Hi! I’m glad you’re here.) you may think you’ve subscribed to a dead Substack…” Yes, it’s apparent that both she and I (yes, me) “dip out” at least once a year or so from regular and consistent writing. I appreciate her honestly sharing that she has simply been life-ing (me, too) and sometimes a writer must give their time and attention to other things. Read Tresta’s story!

2. INSPIRING BLOG POST — ✍🏼 Are You Ready to Vote in the Upcoming Election? This is a great non-partisan encouragement to vote by doing your homework, and being prepared. (I can totally relate to the author’s story of walking into the voting booth unprepared). Love the comparisons between 2024 and the book of Ezekiel’s “alarming days”. And I think I’ll take this quote into the voting booth with me: “Augustine likened Christians to ‘pilgrims traveling through the earthly city on their way to a better country.’”

3. FAVORITE BOOK — 📖 It Wasn’t Roaring, It Was Weeping by Lisa-Jo Baker — If you like reading the occasional memoir, enjoy reading in general, or need a good storyline to take you back in time—read this book by Lisa-Jo Baker. If none of those reasons fit, read it anyway. “With a story that stretches from South Africa’s outback to Washington, D.C., It Wasn’t Roaring, It Was Weeping is a courageous look at inherited hurts and prejudices, and a hope-filled example for all who feel lost in life or worried that they’re too off course to make the necessary corrections.”

4. FAV RECIPE — 🍲 Since our son-in-law is a cattle rancher, our freezer is usually stocked with plenty of ground beef. This recipe for Burger In A Bowl (No Bun) has been on repeat for me over the summer. I like mine to taste like a Big Mac In A Bowl (yes, it’s a thing), so I don’t add bacon or mushrooms. Husband eats his seasoned ground beef on soft tortillas, taco style. This quick and versatile dinner is always a win around here!

5. MUSIC I LOVE — ♭ ♯ If the Lord (Live) - Bethel Music, Zahriya Zachary — This has been on repeat the past week or so, and I wanted to share it with you. As the lyrics say, “If the Lord has brought you through the fire…and if the Lord delivered you from darkness…” then this will encourage you to lift a praise to Him!

Perfectly Suited: The Armor of God for the Anxious Mind—by J.D. Peabody. Many of us grew up, or have come up, in an era of being told there is no excuse for a Christian to be anxious, fearful, or on the verge of a meltdown. But then life happens, and we are human, and we find ourselves there. This book was written by a pastor who found himself there, as well. He has written about it, and how to walk on through it by reaching “for the armor of God.” I needed this book, and maybe you do, too.

He mentions all the things swirling about in their household of teenagers, work obligations, athletic practices and games to be at, a daughter learning to drive, and the commitment to run a food stand at the state fair. All this while his wife must travel to be with her dying father. It is life and death and duty and sorrow all rolled into one. You will enjoy Shawn’s moving story.
