This is more of a practical post, and one which may not ‘fit’ into the usual genre of my content on Substack.
Those of you who subscribed to the previous WordPress blog may remember posts shared over the years listing resources and tools for Bible study, Christian gift ideas, and more.
In this digital age, resources and tools are forever changing.
What was once free may now carry a price tag (and we are sometimes willing to pay the price—or not). A website you found current a decade ago could now be outdated. These changes might have you looking for fresh options online. Readers new to Bible study may well need information on where to find reliable, Christian sources to get you started.
If any of these scenarios apply to you, and you are partial to FREE options, this post should be helpful.
The resources I am sharing today are available online, accessible on most devices, and many have a dedicated app for phone or tablet. Oh, and all have FREE options.
Two well-known websites not highlighted on this list are BibleGateway.com and YouVersion Bible App. Both are excellent resources I use daily. If these are new to you, be sure to check them out.
FREE Bible Study Resources and Tools
Our Daily Bread has been helping millions of people connect with God for seventy-five years. Found on both their website and app are FREE daily devotionals and Bible reading plans. At Our Daily Bread University, you will find many FREE courses on topics like Spiritual Formation, Ministry Leadership, Old and New Testament, World View & Ethics, and more. (They also offer over two hundred premium courses at a low price point.)
BibleProject.com is, in their own words, “a nonprofit, crowdfunded organization that produces 100% FREE Bible videos, podcasts, blogs, classes, and educational Bible resources to help make the biblical story accessible to everyone everywhere.” Find out what they have to offer on their website or app. The teaching videos are great for families with children, as well as new Christians.
BibleStudyTools.com is a personal favorite for looking up Bible verses. Their FREE site is unencumbered, pleasant to the eye, and easy to navigate. One helpful feature is the Bible Verse by Topic, with articles listing Scripture on a particular topic (this feature is better on the website vs. the app.). You will also find a Study Library with Bible commentaries, dictionaries, encyclopedias, and more. Fantastic all-around resource.
BlueLetterBible.org may be most beneficial to experienced students of the Bible. Primarily, I like this FREE resource for the extensive commentary collection and concordance functionality. Their site contains so many great tools that it can be a bit overwhelming, at first. If you long for deeper study and the tools to help facilitate it, this FREE site is a good place to begin.
Crosswalk.com is a FREE online Christian magazine providing content for all believers, no matter where you are in your spiritual journey. You will find an abundance of articles on diverse topics to enhance your own Bible study. You may not agree with every article, but this is a wonderful way to enlarge your understanding of God’s Word and the global Church. (I find their app convenient for researching articles on-the-go, and appreciate the option to choose preferred topics to appear on the home tab.)
AnneGrahamLotz.org is the internet home of Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of Billy Graham. The side offers many FREE resources, including these Bible studies in various formats. Highly recommended is the ‘How to Read the Bible’ interactive study, and the ‘Genesis’ study. (This site may be best suited for women.)
